Valmiera Theatre, thanks to its artistic qualities, strong stage traditions and openness to new impulses, is not only the centre of professional culture in the Vidzeme region, but has been acclaimed as one of the best theatres in Latvia. Valmiera Theatre is also slowly gaining international recognition. In 1885 the Valmiera Association of Latvians built a theatre building for the active amateur theatre.
Since 1919 Valmiera has a professional theatre. At least 4 times per year the theatre goes on guest tours to other Latvian theatres, open-air stages and centres of culture, thus promoting the theatre and attracting audiences from outside the region. In recent years the theatre is gaining increasing attention from professional critics and the media.
Since 1996 the Theatre has regularly been among the nominees and prize-winners at the annual Latvian theatre contest, receiving more than 80 nominations and 22 prizes in the course of 10 years. The Theatre offers tours behind the scenes, meetings with popular actors, shopping at the theatre boutique and an opportunity to enjoy coffee in a special atmosphere.
The Theatre has four halls of different sizes – the Round Hall, the Small Hall, the Large Hall and the Stage of the Large Hall, where the audience is seated on the stage and enjoys together with the actors the spaciousness and height of the stage without losing the intimacy of close-ups.
