Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is a real ocean of green paradise on earth. A rugged mountains belt its panoramic landscape is beyond descriptions. It is a land of wonder for tourist and living treasure for scientists i.e. Ornithologists, Zoologists, Botanists, Ecologists. Indeed, a virgin natural forest with unique natural lakes in the midst of wilderness.
It covers an area of 281.5 sq. km. The altitude varies from 400m to 3568m from Mean Sea Level (MSL). The forest type varies with altitudes. This sanctuary consists of four forest types Tropical Evergreen Forests, Sub-Tropical and Temperate Forests, Temperate Broad Leave Forest and Temperate Conifer Forest.
FLORA - The main associate tree species found in this sanctuary are Terminalia Myriocarpa, Terminalia Bellirica, Clerodendrum Colebroo-Kiarum, Clerodendrum Viscosum, Dendrocalamus Giganteus and Dendrocalamus Hamitonii.
FAUNA - The richness and diversity of the flora composition provides rich varieties of faunal species. The density of vegetation provides food and shelter to the various insects, reptiles, birds and mammals….all together forming a balanced environment and abode of aesthetic beauty. The common species found in the sanctuary are mammals such as Tiger, Leopard, Clouded Leopard etc. Varieties of snake species, both poisonous and non-poisonous such as Black Krait, Banded Kraft are found in this sanctuary.
The bird species which include mainly Goosander, Mallard and Godwall are also found here. The sanctuary is also rich in butterfly species. About 232 species of butterfly were identified which include Common Peacock (Princeps Polctorganesa), Yellow Helen (Princeps Nephelus Chaon) etc.
