Spanning over a 240 square kilometer protected area within the Western Ghats of South India, Mollem National Park is in fact the core area within the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary. Situated at Mollem Town, 57 kilometers to the east of Panaji on the National Highway No. 4A, this wildlife sanctuary with a core area of 107 square kilometers was notified as a National Park in the year 1978. The flora within the Park is classified as the West Coast Tropical Evergreen Forests, West Coast Semi-Evergreen Forests and Moist Deciduous Forests consisting of areas which are mainly seen at higher altitudes and along-side river banks. There are plenty of perennial water sources within the sanctuary which has enabled the region to acquire a thick forest canopy which is almost closed and limited the availability of grass.
Home to a variety of wildlife, the mammals recorded within the Park include the Barking Deer, the Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Bonnet Macaque, Common Langur, Civet, Flying Squirrel, Gaur, the Malabar Giant Squirrel, Mouse Deer, Pangolin, Porcupine, Spotted Deer, Slender Loris, Sambar, Wild Boar & Wild Dogs. The reptiles found within the Park include a variety of snakes like the King Cobra, Bronze-Back Tree Snake, Cat Snake, Hump-Nosed Pit Viper, Indian Rock Python, Malabar Pit Viper, Rat Snake, Russell ’s viper, Indian Cobra and Common Krait.
An interesting amount of birdlife includes the Drongo, the Emerald Dove, Fairy Blue-Bird, Golden Oriole, Greater Indian Hornbill, the Indian Black Woodpecker, Malabar Grey & Pied Hornbills, Grey Headed Myna, Grey Jungle Fowl, Large Green Barbet, Paradise Fly Catcher, Bulbul, Shrikes, Kingfishers, & Wagtails. A variety of butterfly specimen includes Blue Mormon, Common Jezebel, Common Mormon, Common Mime, Plum Judy, Common Wanderer, Crimson Rose, Lime Butterfly, Plain Tiger, Southern Birdwing, Tailed Jay and endemic species like Malabar Tree Nymph and TamilYoeman.
October to March is the most pleasant and the best time to be here; Dabolim Airport near Panaji is the closest and Colem Railway Station is the nearest rail-head at a distance of 6 kilometers from the Par. However it is most convenient and easily accessible through road from Panaji, the capital city of Goa.
